The background to this site (feel free to not read this! ;)
- What happened to SQD?
Some of my visitors may remember the old site at this address - Smiff's
Quality Downloads. I started that site partly to learn HTML, but mainly because
I wanted to share all the cool stuff I'd found on the net with others =) SQD
was surprisingly successful. I had over 10,000 visitors and lots of positive
feedback, from it's launch in March 1999, until I went abroad in December
and wasn't able to update for many months.
- So why the change?
People have asked. SQD was so broad. I tried to cover so many areas,
I would have needed an army of staff to keep it up to date. Even if I had
an army of staff, the result would be site like every other, not as I wanted
it to be. Plus I needed a break from all that white-on-black ;)
- Why N64 emulation?
I found early this year that I was able to help many people with N64
emulation problems via forums. It seemed a logical step to put my knowledge
together in some coherent form, so as to benefit both myself (saving me answering
the same questions repeatedly) and everyone I try to help (it's less personal,
but I can get to more people this way).
- Why now?
This is an exciting time in N64 emulation, it seemed the time was right
for something like NeSC. I only found out after launch that a similar, but
totally seperate, 'support type' site was being run by, ironically, an old
friend of mine dabods, someone I knew from the early days of N64 emulation
on the original UltraHLE forum.
- So why am I doing this?
You can see it isn't for money (there isn't any!) It's simple: I enjoy
helping people. When my visitors tell me they appreciate my work, that's what
makes it all worthwhile.
As I write this at the end of NeSC's first month, I've notched
up over 3000 visitors. The future for NeSC is bright - here's to us all! ;)
I only hope that I'll continue to have the time to keep NeSC current. It may
be that I have to recruit staff, we'll see how it goes.
Below is a list of points I drew up while planning this site, to help me work
out my "angle". Perhaps they will help you understand what NeSC is
about, and what makes it different from other sites.
- This site is intended for gamers, not emulation enthusiasts (but of course
everyone is welcome!)
- I will attempt to provide all the information needed for someome with normal
computing skills to get playing games as quickly as possible.
- No previous emulation experience will be assumed.
- This is neither a news site, nor an illegal rom site. Look elsewhere for
these things.
- I will try to keep the site up to date, by uploading new content at least
once a week.
- The only software you will find here is, in my opinion, the best at what
it does. If there are several ways of doing the same thing, I will only tell
you about the best one.
- If you know a better way (or better software) please tell me about it.
- The content of this site is entirely my original work, and is either factual
or my own opinion.
- If you want to copy something, please give me (Smiff) credit.
- If I've made a mistake somewhere on the site, please tell me.
- If you disagree with something, tell me why.
- I am not the author of any of the software offered here. All credit goes
to the authors.
I just want to add that I'll only support freeware emulators on NeSC. If the
author(s) decide to charge, then that is perfectly within their right, but I
will not provide free support for their customers. I'm sure you understand.
Let's hope they stay free and this doesn't happen :)
I make heavy use of CSS on this site becuse I have a lot of pages
to maintain. As a result, it will most likely look shit if you don't have IE5+
or Opera4+. I know Netscape 4.7 messes up CSS, I believe Netscape 6 is OK. Hopefuly
the site is still useable for you. Sorry about that!
